Administrivia: Spam Users
September 2, 2010 in the site
I mentioned this in the FriendFeed room as well. It looks like we’ve got some spam users registered on this site. While they haven’t (yet) been spamming with anything much but friend requests, I think it’s not the sort of thing we want to encourage, so I’m going to be going through and deleting accounts that are obviously spammy — accounts with nonsense or pr0n email or website domains, people with no apparent connection to librarianship who haven’t made any contributions, that sort of thing.
If I’m unsure, I’ll send you a private message to see what I can find out before I delete. I understand that not everyone can participate online under their real name or identity.
If I delete your account and you’re a real honest to God LSW person, please feel free to stone me with weeded reference books.

Thanks for catching that. I saw some new users whom I didn’t recognize. It might be safe to say nfljersey may a spammer

I saw what you did there!

nfljersey is DEFINITELY a spammer. I’ve deleted that account 4 or 5 times at least. It keeps coming back. *sigh*

Yes. I’m also going to look into seeing if there’s a way I can block people, or something. I know there’s a plugin that would make it possible for us to approve accounts before people could register, but I’d kind of rather not go there quite yet if we don’t have to.

might want to take a look in the ‘groups’ section… yikes!

Thanks, Tim. I’ve deleted the offending bot. I’m trying to keep up with the spam here, but it’s not always easy.

Thanks, Josh! I have really fallen behind on maintaining this. Moving across the country will do that to you.

No problem, Laura! I don’t mind doing some despamming.
